The short answer

304L is the lower-carbon variant of 304. The low-carbon limit reduces sensitization risk in welded material where heat input and corrosive service make heat-affected-zone behavior important. It does not automatically make every product better: the ordered standard, mechanical requirements, thickness, welding plan and environment determine the correct purchase specification.

Technical explanation

What controls the result

The letter L identifies low carbon; it is not a surface, strength or corrosion-life guarantee.

Welded assemblies must control filler, heat input, cleaning, heat tint removal and inspection as well as base-metal grade.

For unwelded stock, the exact product standard and availability may govern the selection more than the suffix alone.
