316 vs 316L Stainless Steel: Corrosion, Welding and RFQ
Distinguish the two molybdenum-bearing grades without using grade name as the whole specification.

The short answer
316L is the lower-carbon version of 316. Both are molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless grades often considered when localized-corrosion resistance needs improvement over 304-type material. The L version is commonly selected for welded fabrications, but it is not a universal answer for seawater, chlorides or chemicals. Define the medium, temperature, deposits, geometry, product standard and weld procedure first.
Technical explanation
What controls the result
Molybdenum can improve localized-corrosion resistance relative to 304-type material, but severity depends on environment and fabrication details.
Low carbon is primarily a welded-fabrication control; it does not erase crevice corrosion, contamination or poor drainage.
Severe chloride duty can require a project corrosion study and a different alloy family.
