The short answer

Stainless pipe is ordered by a nominal pipe size or DN plus a Schedule or specified wall thickness, but the nominal size is not the measured outside diameter for most sizes. ASME B36.19M supplies dimensional series; a product standard such as ASTM A312 controls material, manufacture and tests. A complete order names both dimensional and product requirements.

What controls the result

NPS identifies a piping size series. Outside diameter remains common across several schedules at one NPS while wall thickness and approximate bore change.

The suffix S is used in stainless dimensional series, but availability varies by NPS, grade, manufacturing route and mill program.

Design pressure cannot be selected from Schedule alone; code, material allowable stress, temperature, corrosion allowance, joints and tolerances also matter.
