Pipe and tube are purchasing systems, not interchangeable labels: their dimensional logic, standards, tolerances and end uses differ.

Stainless pipe is generally specified through a piping size system such as NPS/DN with Schedule or wall thickness, while tube is commonly specified by actual outside diameter and wall. Product standards, tolerances, manufacturing, testing and intended service also differ. Choose the applicable code and component function first; do not rename one product to obtain a cheaper quote.

What controls the result
Pipe systems coordinate fittings, flanges and flow service around standardized outside diameters and wall series.
Tube dimensions often control close fit, heat transfer, instrumentation or mechanical assembly, so OD and wall tolerances can be central purchasing variables.
Some mills use commercial wording loosely. The purchase order must resolve ambiguity through the exact product and dimensional standards.
