The short answer

Stainless tube is commonly specified by actual outside diameter and wall thickness rather than NPS and Schedule. The applicable tube standard defines grades, manufacturing route, heat treatment, dimensional tolerances and tests for a particular service. Buyers should state OD × wall, units, length, grade, standard, finish, welded or seamless route, inspection and end-use requirements.

What controls the result

Tube standards are application-specific. Instrumentation, heat-exchanger, mechanical and sanitary tubing can require different dimensions, finishes and tests.

Outside diameter and wall tolerance influence fit, flow area and fabrication. Nominal callouts must not replace the standard tolerance basis.

Weld bead condition, internal roughness, annealing, pickling/passivation and cleanliness should be specified only where the service requires them.
