Selection summary

Overview

430 is a nickel-lean ferritic stainless used for appliances, interior trim, equipment panels, and other sheet applications where moderate corrosion resistance, magnetic response, and cost control are valued. It is less formable and generally less corrosion-resistant than 304 in demanding service.

05

Environment first

Corrosion behavior

01

Useful in indoor and mildly corrosive environments with appropriate finish and cleaning.

02

Lower resistance than 304 to many wet, chloride, and industrial environments.

No material grade is universally corrosion-proof

Temperature, concentration, deposits, crevices, stress, surface finish, cleaning, and fabrication quality can change service performance.

06

Service limits

Temperature & service

01

Prolonged intermediate-temperature exposure can embrittle ferritic stainless steels.

07

Delivery condition

Heat treatment & condition

01

430 is annealed to restore ductility and a ferritic structure after processing; it cannot be hardened by conventional quench-and-temper heat treatment.

02

Prolonged exposure in embrittling temperature ranges and excessive grain growth can reduce toughness, especially in weldments and heavy sections.

08

Process route

Fabrication

01

Good sheet-forming capability for moderate draws; severe forming needs grade and texture review.

02

Thin sections can be welded, but grain growth and toughness require more care than 304.

Magnetic response: Ferromagnetic.

09

Decision boundaries

Comparisons & substitution

01

430 is magnetic and nickel-lean, but it is not a drop-in replacement for 304 where deep drawing, weld toughness, or broader corrosion resistance governs.

02

Stabilized ferritic grades such as 439 or 441 can be more suitable for welded and thermally cycled components.

Ordering scope

Product forms & standards

01

Cold-rolled sheet and strip for formed, appliance, and decorative components.

02

Hot-rolled flat product and bar where the applicable product standard includes 430.

03

Welded tube for suitable mild environments, with weld quality and forming requirements stated.

12

Decision support

Selection guidance

Choose this grade when

  • Magnetic ferritic sheet and cost control are desired in mild service.
  • Decorative finish and oxidation resistance matter more than deep fabrication.

Review another grade when

  • Complex deep drawing or heavy welded sections are required.
  • Exposure is coastal, chloride-rich, or continuously wet.

Before ordering

Procurement checklist

01Order control

Name the governing product standard, edition, dimensions, tolerances, edge, finish, and delivery condition.

02Order control

Require the exact UNS designation and a material test report; a familiar trade name alone is not an acceptance criterion.

03Order control

Confirm corrosion environment, design temperature, fabrication route, inspection, certification, marking, and packaging before order release.
