Selection summary

Overview

8011 is a registered wrought aluminum alloy widely supplied as foil, but alloy identity alone does not define a packaging product. The order must add exact temper, thickness, width, surface side, pinhole and wettability criteria, tensile or burst requirements, cleanliness, food-contact or pharmaceutical compliance, winding, splices and packing.

Engineering scope

This page separates standard-oriented limits from typical reference data. Purchase acceptance comes from the ordered specification and certified material test report.

Similar designations across ASTM, EN, JIS, and other systems are not automatically interchangeable. Product form and ordered standard control chemistry, properties, dimensions, condition, and testing.

Condition matters

Reference properties

Tensile behaviorTemper- and gauge-dependent

O, H18, H22 and other tempers cannot share one acceptance value.

Elongation / dead-foldProcess- and temper-dependent

Forming, lidding and flexible barrier uses need different targets.

05

Environment first

Corrosion behavior

01

The natural oxide film supports general atmospheric stability, but acidic, alkaline, salty and dissimilar-metal contact requires package-system review.

02

Lacquer, laminate, printing ink and sealing layer compatibility can dominate real barrier life.

!
No material grade is universally corrosion-proof

Temperature, concentration, deposits, crevices, stress, surface finish, cleaning, and fabrication quality can change service performance.

06

Service limits

Temperature & service

01

Sterilization, baking, freezing and heat sealing can change temper response, coating adhesion and laminate performance.

07

Delivery condition

Heat treatment & condition

01

8011 is commonly supplied in O or work-hardened H tempers selected for forming or converter performance.

02

Annealing cleanliness, oil removal and final temper are purchase-critical for wettability and bonding.

08

Process route

Fabrication

01

Double rolling can create one bright and one matte side; side orientation must be stated when appearance or coating requires it.

02

Slitting, printing, lacquering, laminating, embossing and forming each add separate acceptance criteria.

Magnetic response: Non-ferromagnetic.

09

Decision boundaries

Comparisons & substitution

01

8011 is included in ASTM B479 packaging-foil scope; 8021 selection more often relies on registered alloy identity and the ordered EN/ISO or customer foil specification.

02

1235, 8079 and other foil alloys differ in chemistry, rolling behavior and converter performance; do not substitute by thickness alone.

Ordering scope

Product forms & standards

01

Annealed foil under ASTM B479 when the alloy, temper and application fall within its scope.

Decision support

Selection guidance

Choose this grade when

  • A proven 8011 converter route provides the required forming, barrier, surface and compliance performance.
  • The RFQ can define the final laminate or formed-package acceptance criteria.

Review another grade when

  • Extreme deep drawing, pinhole control, battery, capacitor or highly regulated pharmaceutical service dominates.
  • The buyer has specified only alloy and thickness without temper, surface, compliance or converter tests.
