Aluminum Sheet and Plate
A specification guide to aluminum sheet and plate, covering alloy, temper, product distinction, gauge, tolerance, surface, inspection, and fabrication requirements.
Terminology
Define the physical product before comparing offers
A grade names the material; a product specification controls the supplied form, dimensions, condition, tolerances, testing, and acceptance. Similar names do not make sheet and plate, or pipe and tube, interchangeable.
Material scope
Common materials and grades
Commercial definition
Forms and dimensions
Sheet and plate are distinguished by product standard, thickness range, and commercial ordering convention
Ordered thickness, width, length, flatness, and dimensional tolerances
Mill finish, anodizing quality, tread pattern, protective film, and cut or sawn edges
Ordering references
Standards and manufacturing route
Common product standards
- ASTM B209/B209M
- EN 485 series
Manufacturing and finishing
- Cast slab is homogenized, hot rolled, and optionally cold rolled to final gauge
- Solution heat treatment, quenching, stretching, aging, or strain hardening establishes the ordered temper
- Leveling, sawing, shearing, surface finishing, and protective-film application are secondary steps
Acceptance controls
Quality and inspection
Verify alloy and full temper designation against the material certificate.
Confirm thickness, width, length, flatness, and applicable tolerance table.
Inspect surface class, film, edge, grain direction, and permitted visual defects.
Agree ultrasonic testing, conductivity, mechanical tests, marking, and export packing where required.
Use contexts
Common applications
- Marine and transport structures
- Machined tooling and equipment
- Architectural and general sheet-metal fabrication
- Electrical and instrument enclosures
