410 Stainless Steel Bar

Procurement guide for heat-treatable 410 martensitic stainless bar, covering annealed or hardened condition, hardness, machining allowance, testing and heat-treatment traceability.

03Grade-product

Specifications and dimensions

  • State round, square, hexagonal or flat bar; diameter or width × thickness; length and applicable size tolerance.
  • State hot-finished, cold-finished, peeled, turned, ground or centerless-ground presentation and straightness class.
  • Define surface roughness, decarburization/scale condition, chamfered ends, ultrasonic-test class and bundle mass where required.

Standards and supply condition

  • ASTM A276/A276M for stainless steel bars and shapes
  • ASTM A484/A484M plus the exact ordered heat-treatment condition

Manufacturing and processing

  • Billet is hot rolled or forged, solution annealed or heat treated as required, straightened and descaled before final finishing.
  • Cold drawing, peeling, turning and grinding change tolerance, surface, residual stress and mechanical response; order the exact route.

Typical applications

  • Valve, pump, shaft and fastener components
  • Wear-resistant machine parts after heat-treatment qualification
  • General cutlery and tooling components where the specification permits

Quality and acceptance controls

  • Verify heat identity, grade chemistry, heat-treatment condition and mechanical results against the material certificate.
  • Measure size, ovality, straightness, length and surface condition using the ordered tolerance table.
  • Inspect laps, seams, cracks, grinding damage and end defects; perform ultrasonic or surface NDE when specified.
  • Confirm marking, heat-to-bundle traceability, rust-free packing and separation from carbon-steel contamination.

Include in your RFQ

  • Exact grade or alloy designation and governing product-standard edition
  • Product form, manufacturing route and ordered delivery condition or temper
  • Nominal dimensions, tolerances, length/coil geometry and quantity
  • Surface finish, edge/end condition, straightness/flatness and permitted defects
  • Fabrication, forming, machining, welding and heat-treatment requirements
  • Mechanical, corrosion, coating or application-specific acceptance tests
  • Inspection document, heat/lot traceability, marking and third-party inspection
  • Packing, preservation, destination, Incoterms and required delivery date

Selection limits

  • 410 designation does not define bar/strip/angle dimensions, condition, finish, tolerance or acceptance; the product standard and order do.
  • 410 properties and corrosion behavior depend strongly on heat treatment; annealed and hardened bars are not interchangeable.
