316L Stainless Steel Strip

Procurement guide for 316L stainless strip combining molybdenum-bearing corrosion context with controlled gauge, slit width, edge, finish, coil geometry and traceability.

03Grade-product

Specifications and dimensions

  • State thickness and slit width with product-standard tolerance, measurement method and any precision-tolerance requirement.
  • Define coil inside/outside diameter, maximum mass, winding direction, telescoping, camber and flatness limits.
  • Order slit, deburred, rounded or conditioned edges with burr height, edge wave, surface finish and protective interleaving/film.

Standards and supply condition

  • ASTM A240/A240M for applicable stainless sheet and strip
  • Ordered ASTM A480/A480M or equivalent general flat-product requirements

Manufacturing and processing

  • Hot band or cold-rolled coil is reduced and annealed to the ordered condition before precision slitting and controlled recoiling.
  • Tension leveling, skin passing, edge conditioning, cleaning and protective film are separate operations that require acceptance criteria.

Typical applications

  • Stamped clips, springs, brackets and precision formed parts
  • Heat-exchanger, appliance and electrical components
  • Decorative trim, automotive and general fabrication

Quality and acceptance controls

  • Match grade, heat/coil number, condition and mechanical results to the certificate and slit-coil labels.
  • Map thickness and width across the coil; inspect camber, flatness, telescoping and winding tension.
  • Inspect finish, scratches, dents, roll marks, edge burr and edge wave against the approved sample.
  • Verify surface cleanliness and downstream forming, stamping, welding or coating compatibility where critical.

Include in your RFQ

  • Exact grade or alloy designation and governing product-standard edition
  • Product form, manufacturing route and ordered delivery condition or temper
  • Nominal dimensions, tolerances, length/coil geometry and quantity
  • Surface finish, edge/end condition, straightness/flatness and permitted defects
  • Fabrication, forming, machining, welding and heat-treatment requirements
  • Mechanical, corrosion, coating or application-specific acceptance tests
  • Inspection document, heat/lot traceability, marking and third-party inspection
  • Packing, preservation, destination, Incoterms and required delivery date

Selection limits

  • 316L designation does not define bar/strip/angle dimensions, condition, finish, tolerance or acceptance; the product standard and order do.
  • Molybdenum does not correct edge burr, trapped crevices, surface contamination or unsuitable forming condition.
