5052 vs 6061 Aluminum: Sheet Selection, Forming and Procurement
Compare a 5xxx sheet alloy with a widely used 6xxx alloy by form, temper and fabrication.

The short answer
5052 and 6061 are not general substitutes. 5052 is a non-heat-treatable 5xxx-series alloy often used in sheet applications needing formability and corrosion resistance, while 6061 is a heat-treatable 6xxx-series alloy widely used where balanced strength and fabrication are required. Choose using product form, temper, bending, welding, machining, corrosion exposure, finish, certified properties and the governing standard.

What controls the result
Alloy number without temper is incomplete purchasing information, especially for mechanical properties and forming response.
The same nominal alloy can be ordered under different product-form specifications with different thickness and property requirements.
Welding, bending radius, machining and finishing should be stated before a supplier proposes a substitute.
