6061 vs 7075 Aluminum: Strength, Corrosion and Machining

The short answer
6061 is a heat-treatable 6xxx-series aluminum alloy widely used for balanced strength, corrosion resistance, fabrication and availability. 7075 is a higher-strength 7xxx-series alloy commonly considered for highly loaded components, but corrosion behavior, toughness, joining, temper and cost require closer control. Compare the exact temper, product specification, thickness and certified properties—not alloy numbers alone.

What controls the result
Temper is part of the material identity for precipitation-hardened aluminum. T6, T651 and other conditions are not interchangeable labels.
Joining route matters: machining, mechanical fastening and welding impose different alloy and temper considerations.
Plate, sheet, extrusion and bar specifications can have different property tables and thickness effects for the same nominal alloy.
