Choose a complete prepainted system by substrate, pretreatment, primer, topcoat, back coat, forming duty, exposure and inspection evidence—not by resin acronym alone.

The short answer
PE, SMP, HDP and PVDF describe broad binder or market categories, not complete performance specifications. Start with the zinc-coated PPGI or aluminum-zinc-coated PPGL substrate, then state pretreatment, primer, named topcoat, back coat, dry-film build, color, gloss, forming duty and exposure. Compare supplier evidence for the exact system and ordered color. ASTM A755 notes that substrate, organic coating and forming method jointly affect the finished product; therefore no resin acronym alone establishes service life, warranty, corrosion resistance or suitability.
Technical explanation
What controls the result
Treat substrate, pretreatment, primer, topcoat and back coat as a connected system. The metallic coating protects differently from the organic finish, while cut edges and forming damage can expose both layers.
PE is commonly screened for cost-controlled general work; SMP for formulation-specific hardness and weathering; supplier-defined HDP for higher exterior durability claims; and PVDF fluoropolymer for demanding color and ultraviolet retention. These are screening directions, not universal rankings.
Formability depends on both substrate and coating. Approve the actual T-bend or forming evidence, tooling condition, profile and minimum bend rather than assuming a premium resin is always more formable.
Inspection must name the method and acceptance rule for relevant film thickness, color difference, gloss, adhesion, bend cracking, humidity, condensation or weathering evidence. Test duration alone is not a service-life prediction.

From service to an auditable specification
Define end use, corrosivity, ultraviolet exposure, condensation, cut-edge condition, design life and maintenance access.
Choose the metallic substrate and coating designation before comparing organic topcoats.
State forming profile, bend, tooling, fasteners, laps, drainage and contact materials.
Approve the exact coating build, test evidence, color sample, warranty wording and inspection plan.
Limitations
What this guide cannot decide alone
- No PE, SMP, HDP or PVDF name creates a universal service life or warranty; supplier formulation, pigment, film build, substrate, exposure and maintenance remain controlling.
- Laboratory weathering, salt spray or condensation results support comparison only within their stated method and acceptance scope; they do not directly predict years in service.
- PPGI and PPGL are not automatic substitutes at cut edges or in contact with alkaline materials, treated timber, incompatible fasteners or persistent wetness.
