Seamless vs Welded Steel Pipe: Selection and Procurement
Manufacturing route must follow the governing specification, service, dimensions, inspection and economics—not a universal quality ranking.

Seamless pipe is produced without a longitudinal weld, while welded pipe is formed and joined by an approved welding process. Neither route is universally superior. The governing product specification, grade, dimensions, pressure-temperature design, corrosion, weld quality, heat treatment, nondestructive examination, availability and total delivered cost determine which route is acceptable for a project.

What controls the result
A product standard may permit one or both routes and attach different heat-treatment or examination requirements. Read the scope and ordering information, not the product name alone.
Dimensional range and mill capability strongly influence availability. A theoretical process preference can create unnecessary lead time if the approved specification already controls performance.
For critical service, the design code and inspection plan should identify required examinations, acceptance criteria and documentation for the selected route.
