Steel Structure Procurement: How to Build a Fabrication-Ready RFQ
A project-led buying framework for warehouse, workshop and industrial steel structures: drawings, scope, welding, coating, inspection, packing and erection interfaces.

The short answer
A steel structure RFQ should begin with approved project information, not a nominal tonnage or a generic steel grade. Define the governing design and execution requirements, drawings and revisions, loads and interfaces, member schedules, connection details, material and bolt requirements, welding and inspection plan, coating or fire-protection scope, packing sequence, delivery boundary and erection responsibility. This makes quotations comparable and prevents a fabricator from guessing the engineering scope.
Technical explanation
What controls the result
AISC 303 describes a contract framework for structural-steel trade practices. Project documents should expressly state any requirements that differ from that framework and identify responsibility boundaries.
A steel grade such as A36, A572 Grade 50, S355 or Q355 is only one material input. It does not define member geometry, connection design, tolerance, weld acceptance, coating, erection stability or local code responsibility.
ISO 3834-1 provides criteria for selecting fusion-welding quality requirements. The applicable level, WPS/PQR, welder qualification, NDE method and acceptance criteria must be named by the project rather than inferred from a generic warehouse description.

Structural calculations, code approvals and erection design remain project-engineering responsibilities unless expressly contracted to qualified parties.
Selection workflow
From service to an auditable specification
Freeze the design basis, approved drawings and interface matrix before asking for fabrication quotations.
Separate primary frame, secondary steel, purlins, deck, cladding, bolts, coating, fire protection and erection into explicit supply boundaries.
Use the governing project standard to define weld quality, inspection, tolerances and documentation; do not copy a generic inspection list across every structure.
Compare offers against the same member schedule and exclusion list, then release fabrication only after document and sample approvals where required.
