Selection summary
Overview
SAE 1008 identifies a chemistry range in SAE J403. It can be screened for forming-oriented cold-rolled sheet, but it does not establish drawing quality, mechanical properties, surface class or delivery condition; those controls belong in the finished-sheet product specification and order.
This page separates standard-oriented limits from typical reference data. Purchase acceptance comes from the ordered specification and certified material test report.
Names and systems
Identity & standards
Similar designations across ASTM, EN, JIS, and other systems are not automatically interchangeable. Product form and ordered standard control chemistry, properties, dimensions, condition, and testing.
Reference chemistry
Composition
| Element | Reference range | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon | Lower-carbon SAE J403 composition range; verify the current ordered chemistry table and heat analysis. | Ductility, strength and forming response |
| Manganese | SAE J403 table and ordered heat analysis | Steelmaking and strength response |
| Phosphorus / sulfur | Specification-controlled limits | Cleanliness and forming behavior |
Concise grade-family reference only. Confirm every element limit against the current standard for the exact product ordered.
Condition matters
Reference properties
A SAE chemistry number does not establish a universal sheet minimum
Use the ordered sheet specification and certified lot data
Commercial, drawing and deep-drawing expectations must be ordered
Environment first
Corrosion behavior
Uncoated low-carbon sheet can rust in humid storage or service and needs suitable protection.
Coating compatibility, cut edges and formed areas require separate review.
Temperature, concentration, deposits, crevices, stress, surface finish, cleaning, and fabrication quality can change service performance.
Service limits
Temperature & service
Use the product specification and component design data for temperature, fatigue or pressure service.
Delivery condition
Heat treatment & condition
Cold-rolled sheet is normally annealed after cold reduction; delivery processing and any subsequent heat cycle must be stated.
The SAE chemistry label does not identify annealed, full-hard, skin-passed or formed condition.
Process route
Fabrication
Cold rolling, annealing, skin pass, surface condition and coil geometry influence forming behavior.
Welding and coating performance require the approved process and substrate condition.
Magnetic response: Ferromagnetic.
Decision boundaries
Comparisons & substitution
SAE 1008 is the lower-carbon chemistry option in this pair; that distinction can support screening but does not certify drawing performance.
Compared with SAE 1010, select from the current J403 chemistry table first, then verify the same finished-sheet quality, processing and test evidence required by the part.

Ordering scope
Product forms & standards
Cold-rolled coil and cut sheet ordered under ASTM A1008/A1008M or the governing equivalent product standard.
Strip, coated sheet, tube, wire, bar and forged products require their own product specifications.

Selection guidance
Choose this grade when
- The drawing or forming route favors the lower-carbon SAE 1008 chemistry and the finished-product class is separately specified.
- The buyer can qualify annealed condition, surface, aging behavior and representative forming performance.
Review another grade when
- Deep drawing, exposed automotive surface, enamelability or tightly controlled strain aging governs acceptance.
- The drawing-quality designation is being inferred from SAE 1008 rather than stated in the product specification.
Before ordering
Procurement checklist
State SAE chemistry designation together with the cold-rolled product specification and ordered edition.
State ASTM A1008 designation, quality/formability class, thickness, width, coil mass, tolerance, surface and oiling requirement.
Require heat identity, chemistry report, dimensional inspection, surface acceptance, packing and destination requirements.
Confirm forming, welding, coating and downstream qualification requirements before approving substitution.
For forming work, state the drawing/formability designation, annealed or temper-rolled condition, surface class, oiling and any representative forming test.
