Selection summary
Overview
SGCC is a JIS G 3302 designation for commercial-quality hot-dip zinc-coated steel sheet and strip. It is not a universal name for all galvanized coil and does not by itself define coating mass, chromate-free treatment, oiling, spangle, skin pass, surface quality, dimensional tolerance, mechanical properties or suitability for a specific formed part.
This page separates standard-oriented limits from typical reference data. Purchase acceptance comes from the ordered specification and certified material test report.
Names and systems
Identity & standards
Similar designations across ASTM, EN, JIS, and other systems are not automatically interchangeable. Product form and ordered standard control chemistry, properties, dimensions, condition, and testing.
Reference chemistry
Composition
| Element | Reference range | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Commercial-quality steel substrate | JIS G 3302 controlled | General forming and fabrication |
| Zinc coating | Separate JIS coating designation | Sacrificial corrosion protection |
| Surface treatment | Ordered separately | Storage, forming and coating compatibility |
Concise grade-family reference only. Confirm every element limit against the current standard for the exact product ordered.
Condition matters
Reference properties
Not a guaranteed deep-drawing or structural grade without additional designation.
Specify both-sides coating and any differential coating requirement.
State thickness basis, width, edge and coil geometry.
Environment first
Corrosion behavior
Service life varies with coating mass, atmosphere, wetness, salts, cut edges and fabrication damage.
Passivation and oiling mainly support storage and processing; they do not replace an exposure-specific corrosion design.
Temperature, concentration, deposits, crevices, stress, surface finish, cleaning, and fabrication quality can change service performance.
Service limits
Temperature & service
Review coating behavior, fumes and oxidation before elevated-temperature fabrication or service.
Delivery condition
Heat treatment & condition
Steel strip is continuously hot-dip zinc coated and finished under JIS G 3302 controls.
Subsequent welding, heating and paint baking can change coating and surface-treatment performance.
Process route
Fabrication
General bending, roll forming and stamping require suitable gauge, coating, finish, lubricant and tooling.
Control zinc fumes, coating burn-off and repair at welds and cut edges.
Magnetic response: Ferromagnetic steel substrate.
Decision boundaries
Comparisons & substitution
SGCC and DX51D+Z belong to different JIS and EN ordering systems and are not automatic equivalents.
ASTM A653 commercial steel uses different coating designations, units and general requirements.

Selection guidance
Choose this grade when
- The customer drawing or market requires JIS G 3302 SGCC commercial-quality galvanized sheet.
- The part uses general forming rather than a separately guaranteed deep-drawing or structural grade.
Review another grade when
- Deep drawing, structural strength, exposed surface or severe corrosion requires another JIS designation or coating system.
- A cross-standard substitution is proposed without comparing all mandatory requirements.
