Galvanized & Coated Steel

Galvanized and coated steels combine a selected steel substrate with zinc, zinc-alloy and/or organic coating systems. Batch galvanizing after fabrication, continuous metallic-coated sheet, electrogalvanized sheet and prepainted coil use different processes, designations, standards and durability assumptions.

Classification basis

This is a commercial coating-system collection rather than one metallurgical alloy family.

Choose the coating process first, then specify substrate, coating designation, surface treatment, fabrication and exposure.

A familiar grade name never replaces the governing product specification and certified documentation.

Standards and designation systems

ASTM A123/A153 and ISO 1461 address batch hot-dip galvanized products within their scopes.

ASTM A653/A792/A879 and EN 10346 distinguish continuous zinc, Al-Zn and electrogalvanized sheet systems.

Prepainted coil specifications add paint, testing and performance requirements to the metallic-coated substrate.

Procurement checklist

  • Specify steel substrate, strength/forming class, metallic coating type and mass/thickness designation.
  • For prepainted products, define pretreatment, primer, top/back coat, dry-film thickness, color/gloss and exposure.
  • State surface treatment, passivation/oiling, inspection, packing, moisture protection, traceability and warranty basis.
