PPGL — Prepainted Al-Zn Coated Steel

PPGL uses a prepainted 55% Al-Zn or related Al-Zn metallic-coated substrate. It combines substrate, Al-Zn coating, pretreatment and paint layers, and should be selected by exposure, forming, cut-edge design and compatible paint system rather than unsupported universal life-multiplier claims.

01

Definition and boundary

Do not transfer coating designations, thickness assumptions or warranties between batch, continuous, electrolytic and prepainted processes.

Reference information only: final acceptance is controlled by the ordered product specification, condition, dimensions and certified test results.

02

How the material system works

01

Coating process determines coverage, alloy layer, surface and applicable designation.

02

Barrier protection and zinc-based sacrificial action depend on coating type, amount and damage geometry.

03

Forming, cutting, welding, storage and environment alter the delivered coating system.

03

Representative grades and systems

Grade or systemSelection focusQualification
AZ50 prepaintedCoating designation used in some inch-pound building specifications.Verify the ordered product specification, condition and dimensions before substitution.
AZ150 prepaintedCommon metric Al-Zn coating mass for roofing and cladding systems.Verify the ordered product specification, condition and dimensions before substitution.
Polyester/SMP/PVDF systemsPaint families whose film build and exposure qualification must be ordered.Verify the ordered product specification, condition and dimensions before substitution.

04

Properties and trade-offs

01

Coating designation must be interpreted under its own standard and unit system.

02

Durability is a system outcome, not a fixed property of the trade name.

03

Surface treatment and paint compatibility affect forming, storage and service.

06

Applications and selection

Applications and selection

  • Roofing, cladding and building envelope systems
  • Automotive, appliance and formed industrial panels
  • Infrastructure, agricultural, utility and general fabrication

Properties and trade-offs

  • Define exposure, design life, appearance and maintenance plan.
  • Choose coating process before coating designation and substrate grade.
  • Detail edges, fasteners, drainage, contacts, welding and repair.

07

Fabrication, durability and inspection

01

Use roll-forming and joining parameters qualified for the complete coating stack.

02

Repair damaged coating and weld zones with a specified compatible method.

03

Prevent wet-storage stain through dry, ventilated handling and packaging.

08

Procurement checklist

  • Specify steel substrate, strength/forming class, metallic coating type and mass/thickness designation.
  • For prepainted products, define pretreatment, primer, top/back coat, dry-film thickness, color/gloss and exposure.
  • State surface treatment, passivation/oiling, inspection, packing, moisture protection, traceability and warranty basis.
