Continuous Galvanized Steel
Continuous galvanized sheet is zinc-coated on a coil line before later slitting, forming and fabrication. Substrate grade, zinc coating designation, surface finish and chemical treatment are ordered together; exposed cut edges and later welds do not receive the same complete post-fabrication coverage as batch galvanizing.
01
Definition and boundary
Do not transfer coating designations, thickness assumptions or warranties between batch, continuous, electrolytic and prepainted processes.
Reference information only: final acceptance is controlled by the ordered product specification, condition, dimensions and certified test results.
02
How the material system works
Coating process determines coverage, alloy layer, surface and applicable designation.
Barrier protection and zinc-based sacrificial action depend on coating type, amount and damage geometry.
Forming, cutting, welding, storage and environment alter the delivered coating system.
03
Representative grades and systems
| Grade or system | Selection focus | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| ASTM A653 G30–G235 | Inch-pound total-both-sides coating-weight designations with specification minima. | Verify the ordered product specification, condition and dimensions before substitution. |
| ASTM A653M Z90–Z600 | Metric total-both-sides coating-mass designations. | Verify the ordered product specification, condition and dimensions before substitution. |
| EN 10346 Z100–Z600 | European continuous zinc-coated flat-product designation families. | Verify the ordered product specification, condition and dimensions before substitution. |
04
Properties and trade-offs
Coating designation must be interpreted under its own standard and unit system.
Durability is a system outcome, not a fixed property of the trade name.
Surface treatment and paint compatibility affect forming, storage and service.

Applications and selection
Applications and selection
- Roofing, cladding and building envelope systems
- Automotive, appliance and formed industrial panels
- Infrastructure, agricultural, utility and general fabrication
Properties and trade-offs
- Define exposure, design life, appearance and maintenance plan.
- Choose coating process before coating designation and substrate grade.
- Detail edges, fasteners, drainage, contacts, welding and repair.
07
Fabrication, durability and inspection
Use roll-forming and joining parameters qualified for the complete coating stack.
Repair damaged coating and weld zones with a specified compatible method.
Prevent wet-storage stain through dry, ventilated handling and packaging.
08
Procurement checklist
- Specify steel substrate, strength/forming class, metallic coating type and mass/thickness designation.
- For prepainted products, define pretreatment, primer, top/back coat, dry-film thickness, color/gloss and exposure.
- State surface treatment, passivation/oiling, inspection, packing, moisture protection, traceability and warranty basis.
09
Standards, sources and review
Standards and designation context
- Applicable ASTM/ISO/EN coating product specification
- Substrate mechanical and forming-grade requirements
- Project paint, corrosion, fabrication, inspection and warranty specification
