Pipeline Steel

Pipeline steels are line-pipe grades supplied as seamless or welded pipe under API, ISO or related project specifications. A grade such as X65 indicates a strength level within a system but does not define pipe process, PSL, delivery condition, dimensions, toughness, sour/offshore service, coating or inspection.

01

Definition and boundary

Line-pipe grade identity belongs to a pipe product specification; it should not be applied casually to plate or structural steel with similar strength.

Reference information only: final acceptance is controlled by the ordered product specification, condition, dimensions and certified test results.

02

How the material system works

01

Controlled rolling/TMCP, microalloying and cleanliness support strength and toughness.

02

Pipe forming and welding route influence anisotropy, weld quality and residual stress.

03

Sour service adds hardness, chemistry and cracking-resistance controls.

03

Representative grades and systems

Grade or systemSelection focusQualification
API 5L B/X42Lower strength line-pipe grades for defined pipeline duties.Verify the ordered product specification, condition and dimensions before substitution.
API 5L X52/X65Common higher-strength grades requiring full PSL and delivery-condition definition.Verify the ordered product specification, condition and dimensions before substitution.
API 5L X70Higher-strength choice with tighter forming, toughness and weld-control implications.Verify the ordered product specification, condition and dimensions before substitution.

04

Properties and trade-offs

01

Specified minimum yield strength rises with X grade but is not the complete design basis.

02

Toughness, DWTT and fracture-control requirements are project- and diameter-dependent.

03

Collapse, burst, fatigue and strain capacity require geometry and system analysis.

06

Applications and selection

Applications and selection

  • Oil, gas and product transmission pipelines
  • Water, slurry and carbon-dioxide transport when specified
  • Onshore, offshore and station piping segments within scope

Properties and trade-offs

  • Define fluid, pressure, temperature, route, diameter/wall and design code.
  • Select PSL, pipe type, grade, delivery condition and service annexes together.
  • Set fracture, sour, offshore, CO2 and coating requirements from the integrity plan.

07

Fabrication, durability and inspection

01

Use qualified welding procedures based on carbon equivalent, thickness, restraint and hydrogen control.

02

Account for rolling direction, residual stress, heat-affected-zone properties and distortion.

03

Apply coating, drainage, corrosion allowance or another material strategy for the actual exposure.

08

Procurement checklist

  • State the governing product specification, grade, dimensions, tolerances and delivery condition.
  • Define impact testing, NDE, through-thickness, heat treatment, weldability and traceability when applicable.
  • Request an MTC tied to heat/lot identity and list all supplementary requirements in the purchase order.

Standards and designation context

  • API Spec 5L 47th edition for line pipe
  • ISO 3183 or project-adopted national equivalents where specified
