Commercially Pure Nickel
Commercially pure wrought nickel grades are selected for strong caustic resistance, controlled electrical or magnetic behavior and fabricability, with carbon level distinguishing general Nickel 200 from temperature-limited Nickel 201 use.
01
Definition and boundary
This group is nickel-rich without the chromium or molybdenum systems used for broad oxidizing-acid resistance; do not treat Nickel 200 and 201 as condition-free substitutes at elevated temperature.
Reference information only: final acceptance is controlled by the ordered product specification, condition, dimensions and certified test results.
02
How the material system works
Nickel remains resistant in many alkaline environments.
Lower carbon in Nickel 201 limits graphitization concerns at higher temperature.
Cold work changes strength and magnetic response.
03
Representative grades and systems
| Grade or system | Selection focus | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Nickel 200 / UNS N02200 | Commercially pure wrought nickel for general caustic and fabrication duty. | Confirm the governing product specification, delivery condition, section size and acceptance tests before treating designations as interchangeable. |
| Nickel 201 / UNS N02201 | Low-carbon variant selected when elevated-temperature exposure governs. | Confirm the governing product specification, delivery condition, section size and acceptance tests before treating designations as interchangeable. |
| Nickel 205 / UNS N02205 | Controlled additions support specialized electrical applications. | Confirm the governing product specification, delivery condition, section size and acceptance tests before treating designations as interchangeable. |

06
Applications and selection
Applications and selection
- Caustic evaporators
- Food and chemical handling
- Electronic and battery components
Properties and trade-offs
- Check oxidizing contaminants in nominally caustic streams.
- Use Nickel 201 where service temperature makes carbon control relevant.
- Specify magnetic or electrical requirements separately from chemistry.
07
Fabrication, durability and inspection
Exclude sulfur-bearing contaminants during heating and welding.
Use clean dedicated tools to prevent embedded iron.
Control cold work where permeability or forming remains important.
08
Procurement checklist
- State UNS and applicable sheet, pipe or bar standard.
- Define annealed or cold-worked condition.
- Specify surface cleanliness, PMI and low-carbon verification where required.
09
Standards, sources and review
Standards and designation context
- UNS designation plus exact ASTM B-series product specification
- Applicable ASME construction code
- Qualified welding and heat-treatment procedure
