Carbon Steel Pipe
A procurement guide to seamless and welded carbon steel pipe, clarifying service specification, nominal size, schedule, manufacturing route, tests, coatings, and end preparation.
Terminology
Define the physical product before comparing offers
A grade names the material; a product specification controls the supplied form, dimensions, condition, tolerances, testing, and acceptance. Similar names do not make sheet and plate, or pipe and tube, interchangeable.
Material scope
Common materials and grades
Commercial definition
Forms and dimensions
Seamless or welded pipe ordered by nominal pipe size and schedule
Outside diameter and wall thickness with specification-controlled tolerances
Plain, beveled, threaded and coupled, or grooved ends as required by the piping system
Ordering references
Standards and manufacturing route
Common product standards
- ASTM A53/A53M
- ASTM A106/A106M
- API Specification 5L
Manufacturing and finishing
- Seamless pipe is pierced and hot finished or cold drawn where the specification permits
- Welded pipe may use electric-resistance or submerged-arc processes according to size and specification
- Heat treatment, sizing, hydrostatic or NDE testing, end finishing, coating, and marking follow the order
Acceptance controls
Quality and inspection
Review the material test report against the ordered grade and product specification.
Confirm dimensions, tolerances, mass, surface condition, and permitted repair.
Verify heat or coil traceability, marking, and required inspection records.
Agree export packing, preservation, third-party inspection, and document language.
Verify pressure test or NDE, weld treatment, end geometry, coating holiday test, and any sour-service requirements.
Use contexts
Common applications
- Process and utility piping
- Water, fire-protection, and mechanical systems
- Oil and gas transmission under the appropriate line-pipe specification
- Piling and structural service
