SAE/AISI 1045 Carbon Steel Bar

Procurement guide for 1045 medium-carbon steel bar covering as-rolled, normalized or heat-treated condition, hardness, machining allowance, inspection and traceability.

03Grade-product

Specifications and dimensions

  • State round, square, hex or flat bar dimensions, length, size tolerance and straightness class.
  • Order hot-rolled, cold-drawn, turned, peeled or ground finish with decarburization and surface-defect limits.
  • Define heat-treatment condition, hardness range, machining allowance, end preparation and bundle mass where needed.

Standards and supply condition

  • SAE J403 chemistry designation for SAE carbon steels
  • ASTM A29/A29M general requirements for hot-wrought carbon and alloy steel bars

Manufacturing and processing

  • Bar is hot rolled or forged and may be normalized, quenched and tempered, turned, peeled or ground to order.
  • Section size and heat-treatment route affect hardness and through-section properties; use an approved process and test location.

Typical applications

  • Shafts, gears, axles and machine components after engineering review
  • Pins, rollers and wear-loaded parts with controlled heat treatment
  • General medium-strength machined components

Quality and acceptance controls

  • Verify SAE/AISI chemistry designation, heat identity and ordered product requirements against the certificate.
  • Test mechanical properties or hardness in the ordered condition and section size where required.
  • Measure size, ovality, straightness and length; inspect seams, laps, cracks, scale and decarburization.
  • Use ultrasonic, magnetic-particle or surface inspection when component criticality and the purchase specification require it.

Include in your RFQ

  • Exact grade or alloy designation and governing product-standard edition
  • Product form, manufacturing route and ordered delivery condition or temper
  • Nominal dimensions, tolerances, length/coil geometry and quantity
  • Surface finish, edge/end condition, straightness/flatness and permitted defects
  • Fabrication, forming, machining, welding and heat-treatment requirements
  • Mechanical, corrosion, coating or application-specific acceptance tests
  • Inspection document, heat/lot traceability, marking and third-party inspection
  • Packing, preservation, destination, Incoterms and required delivery date

Selection limits

  • 1045 chemistry alone does not guarantee hardness, toughness or through-section properties; condition and section size control.
  • Welding normally needs more control than low-carbon grades; qualify preheat, consumables and post-weld treatment for the component.
