Carbon Steel Profiles

Carbon steel profiles are rolled structural sections such as H and I sections, channels, tees and hollow sections; they are purchased as standardized members, not as a fabricated building system delivery package.

Common grades

Specifications and dimensions

  • Section designation, nominal depth, flange width, web and flange thickness and mass per length
  • Standard mill length or fixed length, straightness, sweep, camber and twist
  • Rolled surface, blast-cleaned or primed condition and permitted end processing

Standards and supply condition

  • ASTM A6/A6M general requirements with the ordered structural grade specification
  • EN 10025-2 material requirements with section dimensional standards such as EN 10034 where applicable

Manufacturing and processing

  • Bloom or beam blank is reheated and passed through section mills to form the web and flanges.
  • Controlled cooling, straightening, cutting, marking and optional shot blasting or primer complete supply.

Typical applications

  • Building and industrial frames
  • Bridges, platforms and transport structures
  • Equipment supports, pipe racks and crane structures

Quality and acceptance controls

  • Match heat or coil identity, grade, product specification and delivery condition to the material certificate.
  • Check dimensions, tolerances, straightness or flatness, surface condition, marking and permitted repair.
  • Agree mechanical, impact, pressure, NDE or coating tests and third-party witness points before production.

Include in your RFQ

  • Grade and governing product specification
  • Hot-rolled or cold-rolled route and delivery condition
  • Dimensions, tolerances, length or coil geometry and quantity
  • Surface, edge or end preparation and coating requirement
  • Mechanical, impact, pressure, NDE and inspection-document requirements
  • Marking, traceability, packing, destination and delivery term

Selection limits

  • Section availability and dimensional series vary by regional standard and mill; nominally similar shapes may not share properties.
  • Member selection and connection design remain the responsibility of the project structural engineer.
