Overview

API 5L Grade B and X42 are line-pipe designations that must be ordered with the applicable product specification, PSL, manufacturing route, dimensions, delivery condition and service requirements. The grade name alone is not a complete purchase description.

Designation and acceptance

API Spec 5L covers seamless and welded line pipe. Its 47th edition states requirements across manufacturing, inspection, testing, marking and traceability; product specification level and service annexes remain part of the ordered requirement.

Members and selection

DesignationSelection context
Grade BA lower-strength API 5L designation considered only when the project design basis, PSL, pipe type, dimensions and service conditions accept it.
X42A higher minimum-strength designation than Grade B in the API naming sequence; it is not an automatic upgrade without checking weldability, toughness, delivery condition and project requirements.

Comparison framework

CriterionDecision context
Acceptance basisPSL, grade, pipe type, delivery condition, dimensions, supplementary service requirements and inspection records together govern the order.

Performance

  • Do not substitute Grade B and X42 solely from a nominal strength comparison; design, fracture, weld, sour-service and installation conditions can govern.

Orderable product scope

  • Carbon steel line pipe: state API Spec 5L edition, PSL, grade, pipe type, OD, wall thickness, length, end preparation, coating and documentation.

Processing

  • Confirm the approved seamless or welded manufacturing route, delivery condition, welding/NDE requirements, hydrotest, marking and record retention before manufacture.

Applications

  • Oil, gas and energy-transportation pipelines where the complete project specification qualifies the selected pipe.

Selection

  • Start from the project design basis and applicable code, then define service, PSL, pipe type, dimensions, delivery condition and testing. Select a grade only after these controls are known.

Procurement

  • For quotation, provide the current API Spec 5L edition, PSL, grade, type, dimensions, quantity, delivery condition, service annexes, NDE/hydrotest, coating, marking, certificates, destination and inspection plan.
