Overview
API 5L X52–X65 is a selection range, not a group of interchangeable commodity labels. Define PSL, type, dimensions, delivery condition, service annexes, NDE, hydrotest and documentation.
Designation and acceptance
API Spec 5L 47th edition covers manufacture, inspection, testing, marking and traceability. The X-number does not replace the project specification, PSL or service qualification.
Members and selection
| Designation | Selection context |
|---|---|
| X52 | Confirm PSL, type, design stress, weldability and toughness before selection. |
| X60 | Review delivery condition, fracture control, welding and inspection requirements. |
| X65 | Use only where approved design, manufacturing route and qualification evidence support it. |
Comparison framework
| Criterion | Decision context |
|---|---|
| Selection boundary | Strength, PSL, type, delivery condition, sour/CO₂/offshore service, testing and records form one decision package. |
Performance
- A higher X designation alone does not prove fracture performance, weldability or fitness for a pipeline route.
Orderable product scope
- API 5L carbon steel line pipe in the approved seamless or welded type, with dimensions, ends, coating and records specified.
Processing
- Verify manufacturing route, delivery condition, NDE, hydrotest, weld controls, marking and record retention before release.
Applications
- Oil, gas, CO₂ and energy transportation only where the complete specification qualifies the selected pipe.
Selection
- Define design basis, fluid, temperature, pressure, route and installation constraints before grade selection.
Procurement
- RFQ must state sour or CO₂ service if applicable, PSL, grade, type, OD, wall, length, delivery condition, NDE, hydrotest, coating, ends, marking, certificates and destination.
