Overview

ASTM B209/B209M-21a covers aluminum and aluminum-alloy flat sheet, coiled sheet and plate in listed alloys, tempers and finishes. A defensible order states product form, unit document, alloy-temper, dimensions, finish, flatness, grain direction, test evidence and any marine, aerospace or fabrication qualification beyond B209.

Designation and acceptance

B209 combines alloy, temper and flat-product identity; none is optional. Sheet, coiled sheet and plate have different handling and dimensional implications, and mill finish or bright-finish branches are limited by alloy family. Tread plate, foil and specialized marine or aerospace products require separate scope checks rather than silent inclusion under a familiar alloy number.

Members and selection

DesignationSelection context
Non-heat-treatable sheetSelect alloy and H/O temper from forming, corrosion and strength requirements.
Heat-treatable sheetState T temper and verify heat-treatment, quench and aging evidence.
PlateDefine thickness, flatness, grain direction, machining allowance and residual-stress temper.
Coiled sheetState coil ID/OD, mass, winding, telescoping, surface and packaging limits.

Comparison framework

CriterionDecision context
Sheet vs plateProduct identity affects thickness conventions, flatness, handling and processing.
Alloy vs temperThe same alloy in different tempers has different strength, forming and stability.
B209 vs B928Marine 5xxx H116/H321 service may require B928 corrosion controls beyond B209.
Mill finish vs bright finishFinish availability depends on alloy, form and agreed surface acceptance.

Performance

  • Acceptance under ASTM B209 Aluminum Flat Products depends on the ordered product branch, delivered condition, geometry and specified test basis rather than the standard number alone.
  • Residual stress, anisotropy, sensitization and surface damage vary with alloy, temper, thickness and processing history.
  • Service suitability remains an engineering decision: B209 conformance alone does not establish aerospace approval, marine exfoliation resistance, welding procedure or finished-part design.

Orderable product scope

  • Flat aluminum sheet in cut lengths.
  • Coiled aluminum sheet with controlled coil geometry.
  • Aluminum plate for machining, fabrication or structural components.

Processing

  • Manage grain direction, bend radius and temper when forming sheet or plate.
  • Qualify welding and post-process corrosion cleaning for the selected alloy family.
  • Protect surfaces from steel contamination, trapped moisture and handling scratches.

Applications

  • General fabricated enclosures, panels and formed components.
  • Machined plate and transportation structures after design qualification.
  • Process, architectural or marine components when the applicable supplemental specification is satisfied.

Selection

  • Confirm that ASTM B209 Aluminum Flat Products covers the required product form and manufacturing or coating route before comparing quotations.
  • Select the grade, alloy, temper, coating or delivered condition from service, fabrication and the required acceptance evidence; never infer it from a trade name.
  • Require a written technical comparison and responsible-engineer approval before substituting another standard, product route or condition.

Procurement

  • State ASTM B209/B209M-21a, unit system, sheet/coiled sheet/plate, exact alloy and temper.
  • State thickness, width, length or coil ID/OD/mass, quantity, tolerances and flatness.
  • Define finish, protective film, grain direction, edge, tensile/corrosion or ultrasonic evidence as applicable.
  • Require inspection report, lot traceability, alloy-safe marking, interleaving and dry packaging.
