Overview

ASTM B265-25 covers annealed titanium and titanium-alloy strip, sheet and plate across commercially important grades. Grade identity alone is incomplete: buyers must state product form, thickness, dimensions, annealed condition, surface, flatness, bend requirements, interstitial chemistry, testing and application qualification.

Designation and acceptance

B265 assigns numeric titanium grades tied to UNS compositions and flat-product requirements. Commercially pure Grades 1–4 vary principally through controlled interstitials and strength; alloy grades such as Grade 5 have different forming and service behavior. H variants share a numeric-grade chemistry but add a higher guaranteed minimum tensile strength. Aerospace or medical acceptance is not implied by B265 conformity.

Members and selection

DesignationSelection context
Commercially pure Grades 1–4Choose from strength, formability, corrosion duty and interstitial control rather than calling all CP titanium equivalent.
Grade 5 familyUse only after forming, welding, toughness and service-temperature needs fit the alpha-beta alloy.
Palladium/ruthenium-bearing gradesSelect for qualified corrosion environments with full alloy and application review.
H gradesRecognize the higher guaranteed tensile requirement while preserving the corresponding chemistry and form rules.

Comparison framework

CriterionDecision context
Strip vs sheet vs plateForm determines thickness/width conventions, coil or cut handling, flatness and edge controls.
CP vs alloy titaniumStrength, formability, heat treatment and corrosion response differ significantly across grade families.
Interstitial controlOxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen and iron control affect strength, ductility and processing response.
Industrial vs aerospaceASTM B265 is not an automatic substitute for AMS or customer-qualified aerospace material specifications.

Performance

  • Acceptance under ASTM B265 Titanium Flats depends on the exact alloy or grade, delivered condition, product geometry and specified test basis rather than the standard number alone.
  • Hydrogen pickup, embedded iron, heat tint and surface damage can impair corrosion or ductility after compliant mill delivery.
  • Service suitability remains an engineering decision: grade number alone does not establish flat-product form, thickness capability, surface, weld quality or equipment-code acceptance.

Orderable product scope

  • Annealed titanium strip in coil with width, edge, coil and surface controls.
  • Annealed titanium sheet for forming, welding and equipment fabrication.
  • Titanium plate with thickness, flatness, surface and cutting/edge requirements.

Processing

  • Use clean dedicated tooling and prevent iron contamination during cutting, forming and grinding.
  • Qualify bend radii and forming temperature for grade, thickness, direction and surface condition.
  • Control shielding, cleanliness and heat tint during welding; restore surfaces under an approved procedure.

Applications

  • Chemical-process equipment and corrosion-resistant liners after media and fabrication review.
  • Heat-transfer, marine and desalination components using an appropriate titanium grade.
  • Industrial formed parts where B265, not an aerospace or medical specification, is the accepted basis.

Selection

  • Confirm that ASTM B265 Titanium Flats actually covers the required product form and manufacturing route before comparing grades or quotations.
  • Select alloy or grade and delivered condition from service, fabrication, section size and required property evidence; do not infer condition from a trade name.
  • Require a written technical comparison and responsible-engineer approval before substituting another standard, alloy, condition or product route.

Procurement

  • State ASTM B265-25, exact titanium grade/UNS, strip sheet or plate and annealed condition.
  • State thickness, width, length or coil geometry, quantity, tolerances, flatness and edge condition.
  • Define surface, bend direction/test, chemistry/product analysis, tensile evidence and any ultrasonic inspection.
  • Require inspection report, heat/lot traceability, contamination-safe marking, interleaving and dry protective packing.
