Overview
EN 10083 remains common on legacy drawings for quenching-and-tempering steels, but the former EN architecture has been superseded in current purchasing by adopted ISO 683 parts. Buyers should not silently rewrite a drawing: identify the legacy requirement, confirm the accepted replacement and preserve grade, form, delivery condition, size and inspection obligations.
Designation and acceptance
Legacy EN 10083-1 provided general requirements with EN 10083-2 non-alloy and EN 10083-3 alloy steel parts. Current ISO 683-1:2016 covers non-alloy steels for quenching and tempering, while ISO 683-2:2016 covers alloy steels. The migration changes the document identity and must be approved contractually; a familiar steel name such as C45 or 42CrMo4 does not by itself prove full product equivalence.

Performance
- Acceptance under EN 10083 / ISO 683 depends on the exact alloy or grade, delivered condition, product geometry and specified test basis rather than the standard number alone.
- A superseded EN callout can create certificate rejection or inconsistent properties if replaced without purchaser approval.
- Service suitability remains an engineering decision: grade-name similarity does not preserve edition, product scope, delivery condition, size-dependent properties or inspection document.
Orderable product scope
- Semi-finished blooms, billets or slabs where the accepted part includes them.
- Hot-formed bars, wire rod and finished flat products under the applicable ISO part.
- Hammer or drop forgings within scope and with project-specific property-location controls.
Processing
- Confirm whether supplied stock is ready for machining or requires final quenching and tempering.
- Develop heat treatment around section size, hardenability, quench severity and distortion control.
- Verify mechanical properties at the required location and preserve treatment-lot traceability.
Applications
- Gears, shafts and highly loaded machine parts made from alloy Q&T steels.
- Pins, rods and general mechanical parts using non-alloy Q&T families.
- Flame- or induction-hardened components where the accepted ISO part includes the selected grade.
Selection
- Confirm that EN 10083 / ISO 683 actually covers the required product form and manufacturing route before comparing grades or quotations.
- Select alloy or grade and delivered condition from service, fabrication, section size and required property evidence; do not infer condition from a trade name.
- Require a written technical comparison and responsible-engineer approval before substituting another standard, alloy, condition or product route.
Procurement
- Quote the drawing's legacy EN 10083 callout and request written approval for the proposed ISO 683-1 or ISO 683-2 replacement.
- State complete steel name/material number, applicable part and edition, product form, size and quantity.
- State delivery condition, hardenability or mechanical properties, test location, surface and dimensional requirements.
- Require inspection document, heat/treatment-lot traceability, marking and a documented cross-standard comparison.
