Overview
GB/T 221 establishes notation rules for Chinese iron and steel designations. It explains how symbols, element letters and numerical values are assembled, but the resulting name must still be tied to the applicable product standard, condition and acceptance requirements.
Designation and acceptance
GB/T 221-2008 is the current published notation standard for designations of iron and steel. It defines symbol-based designation methods across several steel families. A separately listed revision project is not yet a replacement for the current edition, and neither document should be confused with the product standards that specify chemistry, properties, dimensions and inspection.

Orderable product scope
- Structural plate, sheet and sections require the relevant product standard, grade, delivery condition and thickness range.
- Machine-structural bars and forgings require form-specific requirements, heat treatment, surface quality and tests.
- Stainless, tool and bearing products require their own family and product documents in addition to the GB/T 221-style name.
Processing
- Confirm the full designation, including prefixes and suffixes, against the invoked product standard before production.
- Maintain heat traceability because translation or shortened trade names can remove meaningful symbols.
- Base heat treatment, welding and machining controls on the actual ordered condition and certificate values.
Applications
- Reading Chinese mill certificates and checking that a grade name is complete.
- Writing export RFQs that pair a Chinese designation with its governing GB/T product standard.
- Preparing an engineering comparison with non-Chinese standards without claiming automatic equivalence.
Selection
- Select the required product form and governing product standard before choosing a designation.
- Decode every symbol under the applicable GB/T 221 family rule and confirm chemistry and condition.
- Compare properties, tests, dimensions, certification and project approval before accepting an alternative.
Procurement
- State the complete GB/T designation and governing product standard.
- State the required edition, product form, dimensions, tolerances and quantity.
- Define delivery condition, surface, properties and any service-specific limits.
- Specify inspection, testing, certificate type, marking and heat/lot traceability.
