Overview
ISO 1461:2022 specifies general properties and test methods for hot-dip galvanized coatings applied by zinc-melt immersion to fabricated iron and steel articles, including certain castings. Orders must still define article category, base material, design for galvanizing, inspection/sampling, local repair, documentation and exclusions for continuous products or automatic-line pipe.
Designation and acceptance
ISO 1461 is an international fabricated-article coating standard, not the standard for every zinc-coated product. It excludes continuously galvanized sheet, wire and mesh, automatic-plant galvanized pipe/tube and products such as fasteners covered by specific documents. Coating mass/thickness methods and sampling demonstrate coating acceptance, not predicted life in a named atmosphere.

Performance
- Acceptance under ISO 1461 Galvanized Coatings depends on the ordered product branch, delivered condition, geometry and specified test basis rather than the standard number alone.
- Reactive steel chemistry, fabrication geometry and thermal movement can change coating thickness, texture and dimensions.
- Service suitability remains an engineering decision: ISO 1461 does not cover after-treatment, additional paint, continuous products or a site-specific corrosion warranty.

- Design openings for full cleaning, zinc flow, air release and safe withdrawal.

Selection
- Confirm that ISO 1461 Galvanized Coatings covers the required product form and manufacturing or coating route before comparing quotations.
- Select the grade, alloy, temper, coating or delivered condition from service, fabrication and the required acceptance evidence; never infer it from a trade name.
- Require a written technical comparison and responsible-engineer approval before substituting another standard, product route or condition.
Procurement
- State ISO 1461:2022, article type, base material, fabrication condition and governing project additions.
- Provide drawings with vent/drain details, closed sections, threads, critical dimensions and uncoated areas.
- Define inspection lot, sampling, measurement method, appearance agreement and local renovation procedure.
- Require coating records, article traceability, careful handling and documentation of repairs or concessions.
