Overview
JIS G 3302:2022 covers hot-dip zinc-coated steel sheet and strip, including flat and corrugated products within its scope. Commercial callouts such as SGCC must remain tied to the active JIS edition, coating-mass designation, dimensions, surface treatment, shape and application; the grade symbol alone is not a complete coated-sheet order.
Designation and acceptance
JIS G 3302:2022 is the active Japanese Industrial Standard for hot-dip zinc-coated steel sheet and strip. Its designation framework combines a base product/application symbol with zinc-coating mass and additional delivery details. The official English preview identifies the scope boundary; buyers should obtain the controlled full standard and not infer ASTM A653 or EN 10346 equivalence from familiar commercial labels.
Members and selection
| Designation | Selection context |
|---|---|
| SGCC | Commercial-quality hot-dip zinc-coated sheet/strip; complete it with coating, size, surface and processing requirements. |
| Forming-quality symbols | Select the exact drawing/forming family from component strain and documented mill capability. |
| Structural-quality symbols | Strength-oriented products require exact class, thickness range and design acceptance. |
| Flat or corrugated product | State flat sheet/strip or corrugated geometry, including profile and tolerances where applicable. |
Comparison framework
| Criterion | Decision context |
|---|---|
| JIS product symbol | The symbol identifies a JIS product family, not the entire mechanical, dimensional and surface purchase definition. |
| Coating designation | JIS coating-mass notation must be interpreted under JIS G 3302 rather than converted by label alone. |
| Product geometry | Sheet, strip and corrugated products impose different dimensional, shape and packaging controls. |
| Cross-standard claims | SGCC, DX51D and ASTM commercial steel can overlap in market use but are not automatic standard equivalents. |
Performance
- Corrosion performance depends on ordered coating mass, service exposure, edges, forming and maintenance.
- Forming response depends on exact substrate designation, thickness, coating and component geometry.
- Surface treatment affects storage stain, painting, bonding and downstream cleaning requirements.
Orderable product scope
- Hot-dip zinc-coated coil and strip ordered to JIS G 3302.
- Cut galvanized sheet with declared dimensions, flatness and surface requirements.
- Corrugated galvanized sheet with complete profile, coating and end-use specification.
Processing
- Confirm slitting, cut-edge, forming and corrugating allowances before fixing coil width.
- Validate welding, painting or adhesive processes against the ordered coating and treatment.
- Package against humidity, condensation, edge impact and telescoping during international shipment.
Applications
- General fabricated sheet-metal components where SGCC and the selected coating meet design needs.
- Building and enclosure products after profile, fastener, drainage and exposure review.
- Formed industrial components using an appropriate JIS forming or structural family.
Selection
- Choose the JIS base-product family from forming, strength and geometry requirements.
- Set coating mass and surface treatment from exposure and downstream processing.
- Use supplier comparison data and engineer approval before substituting an ASTM or EN product.
Procurement
- State JIS G 3302:2022, exact product/application symbol and flat sheet, strip or corrugated form.
- State zinc-coating mass designation, ordered thickness, width, length or coil mass/ID and dimensional tolerances.
- Define surface appearance, treatment/oil, spangle where contractually relevant, forming, paint and welding needs.
- Specify JIS G 3302 inspection, coating and base-sheet evidence, traceability, marking, moisture-resistant packing and destination.
