Overview

A UNS number is a composition-family identifier used to correlate metal and alloy designations. It helps records and cross-references, but it does not state product form, dimensions, delivery condition, properties, tests or purchase acceptance.

Designation and acceptance

ASTM E527 and SAE J1086 establish the Unified Numbering System as an alphanumeric identification framework for metals and alloys with commercial standing. A family letter and five digits identify an alloy entry or composition family. The identifier is not an ASTM product specification, a certificate, or proof that products carrying similar national names are interchangeable.

Performance

  • Weldability and fabrication decisions require the ordered chemistry, condition and product history rather than a family-level identifier.

Orderable product scope

  • Flat products: state the plate, sheet, strip or foil product specification, thickness, finish and condition.
  • Long products and forgings: state the bar, shape, wire, forging or billet specification plus dimensions and heat treatment.
  • Tubular and cast products: state pipe/tube/casting specification, manufacturing route, dimensions, inspection and service additions.

Processing

  • Verify heat treatment or temper on the material certificate because the UNS identifier does not encode the delivered condition.
  • Confirm manufacturing route, weld procedure, forming limits and post-fabrication treatment against the actual product specification.
  • Maintain heat/lot traceability between the ordered designation, product marking and inspection records.

Applications

  • Cross-referencing alloy records during preliminary material research.
  • Normalizing databases where national or trade names create duplicate identifiers.
  • Preparing a substitution review that will later compare full product and service requirements.

Selection

  • Start with the required material family and service mechanism, then identify the candidate UNS entry.
  • Locate the governing product specification for the requested form and confirm it includes the candidate designation.
  • Compare condition, properties, dimensions, testing, certification and project approval before accepting a substitution.

Procurement

  • State the UNS number together with the common or product-standard grade name.
  • State the governing product specification and contract-required edition.
  • Define product form, dimensions, tolerances, finish and quantity.
  • Define delivery condition, tests, inspection, certificates, marking and service-specific additions.
