The short answer

Aluminum does not rust in the iron-oxide sense because it contains no iron as its base metal, but it does corrode. A compact natural oxide usually protects the surface. Chlorides, alkaline or acidic chemicals, trapped moisture, galvanic contact and poor storage can disrupt that protection, causing pitting, staining or section loss depending on alloy and condition.

What controls the result

Alloy series and temper influence strength, forming and corrosion response. A designation alone is incomplete without product form and temper.

White or dark water stain can develop when moisture is trapped between closely stacked sheets or coils. It is a storage and packaging warning, not a universal measure of structural loss.

Galvanic corrosion depends on electrical contact, electrolyte and area ratio. Isolating joints and controlling drainage may matter as much as changing alloy.
