SAE 1018 identifies a low-carbon steel chemistry, not a single guaranteed strength condition. Hot-rolled, cold-finished, normalized, forged, drawn, and machined products can have different properties, dimensions, surface quality, and residual stress.

1018 can be supplied hot rolled, cold finished, annealed, normalized, stress relieved, or case hardened depending on product specification and processor route.

Its low carbon content limits through-hardening response; carburizing or carbonitriding may create a hard case while retaining a tougher core, but case depth and hardness require a controlled process specification.

1018 and 1020 overlap in many applications, but heat chemistry, product analysis, availability, machinability, cold-finished properties, and case-hardening response must be checked before substitution.

Choose 1045 or alloy steel when higher core strength or hardenability is required rather than relying on cold-finished 1018 values outside their ordered condition.

Product forms & standards

Hot-rolled or cold-finished bar under a product specification that invokes the required chemistry, dimensions, surface, and testing controls.

Wire rod, wire, tube, sheet, plate, or forgings require their own product specification; the SAE chemistry designation alone does not define delivery requirements.

Machined components must retain heat identity and condition records when chemistry, hardness, or heat treatment is acceptance-critical.

Choose this grade when

  • A readily machined and fabricated low-carbon bar chemistry is suitable.
  • The order separately defines product standard, condition, dimensions, and mechanical requirements.

Review another grade when

  • Higher hardenability, wear resistance, fatigue strength, or through-section strength is needed.
  • A structural or pressure product specification rather than a chemistry designation governs.
