Environment first
Corrosion behavior
Uncoated A36 forms rust in wet atmospheric exposure and normally needs a coating, galvanizing, enclosure, or corrosion allowance.
Do not substitute weathering or marine steel solely on strength; corrosion environment and product specification differ.
Temperature, concentration, deposits, crevices, stress, surface finish, cleaning, and fabrication quality can change service performance.

Fire, low-temperature toughness, fatigue, and elevated-temperature design require the governing structural code.

Heat treatment & condition
A36 is commonly supplied in a mill-rolled condition permitted by the product specification; heat treatment is not inferred from the grade name.
Normalizing, stress relief, or other post-fabrication treatment must be ordered and engineered separately because it can change properties, distortion, toughness, and coating or welding plans.

Generally weldable with procedures based on thickness, restraint, carbon equivalent, consumable, and service.
Forming radius, lamellar-tearing risk, toughness, and through-thickness requirements require project-specific review.

Comparisons & substitution
A572 Grade 50 offers a higher minimum yield-strength level, but section availability, weld procedure, deflection, stability, toughness, and project approval still control substitution.
A588 adds an atmospheric-corrosion-resistance requirement; it is not selected solely because a strength value resembles A36 or A572.

Sheet, pipe, tube, forgings, and pressure parts require separate product specifications even when commercial descriptions mention A36.

Choose this grade when
- A common structural specification with moderate strength is adequate.
- Shapes, plate, or bars are ordered under A36/A6 with clear project requirements.
Review another grade when
- Higher yield strength, atmospheric corrosion resistance, or certified notch toughness is needed.
- Pressure-vessel, ship, bridge, or line-pipe codes govern the component.
