Comparisons & substitution

A588 provides enhanced atmospheric-corrosion resistance relative to ordinary structural carbon steel, but it is not intended to resist permanent immersion, buried exposure, or continuously wet chloride deposits without engineering controls.

Use A572 or A36 when weathering behavior is unnecessary, and use the applicable bridge specification when bridge-specific toughness and supplementary requirements apply.
