Overview
API 5L Grade B is a lower-strength tier relative to X52 and X65 in the API 5L line-pipe family. It can suit project-defined gathering, distribution or utility pipeline duty, but the current edition, PSL, pipe type, dimensions, design code, medium and supplementary requirements—not the grade name—establish acceptance.
This page separates standard-oriented limits from typical reference data. Purchase acceptance comes from the ordered specification and certified material test report.

ASTM A53 Grade B and A106 Grade B share a letter but have different product scopes; they are not substitutes for API 5L Grade B by name.

Choose this grade when
- The pipeline design permits the lower-strength Grade B tier and the project material specification names API 5L.
- Gathering, distribution or utility duty has defined PSL, pipe type, joining, corrosion and inspection requirements.
Review another grade when
- Higher pressure, diameter or route economics point toward an X-grade and require a new wall-thickness/design assessment.
- Sour service, offshore, low-temperature, fracture-control or pressure-piping scope changes the order basis.
