Selection summary
Overview
API 5L X52 is a line-pipe grade under API Specification 5L. A complete order identifies the current edition, X52, PSL, seamless or welded route, dimensions, delivery condition and pipeline-specific supplementary requirements. The grade name alone does not establish sour-service suitability, fracture control, design pressure or interchangeability with ASTM A53 or A106 pipe.
This page separates standard-oriented limits from typical reference data. Purchase acceptance comes from the ordered specification and certified material test report.
Names and systems
Identity & standards
Similar designations across ASTM, EN, JIS, and other systems are not automatically interchangeable. Product form and ordered standard control chemistry, properties, dimensions, condition, and testing.
Reference chemistry
Composition
| Element | Reference range | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Alloy or steel composition | Controlled by the governing designation and ordered edition | Supports identification and grade-level acceptance |
| Residual or alloying elements | Verify from the applicable standard and certificate | Controls processing and service response |
Concise grade-family reference only. Confirm every element limit against the current standard for the exact product ordered.
Condition matters
Reference properties
A designation is meaningful only with its governing standard, edition and product form.
Typical web values are screening information, not purchase acceptance limits.
Environment first
Corrosion behavior
Corrosion control depends on the complete material system and service environment.
Review coatings, lining, corrosion allowance or alloy upgrading where the medium requires them.
Temperature, concentration, deposits, crevices, stress, surface finish, cleaning, and fabrication quality can change service performance.
Service limits
Temperature & service
Confirm temperature limits through the governing design code, product standard and complete material system.
Delivery condition
Heat treatment & condition
Do not infer heat treatment or temper from an incomplete designation.
State the ordered condition or temper and verify it on the certificate.
Process route
Fabrication
Qualify forming, welding, joining and surface-repair procedures for the ordered product form.
Preserve material or coating traceability after cutting and secondary processing.
Magnetic response: The steel substrate is ferromagnetic.
Decision boundaries
Comparisons & substitution
API 5L, ASTM A53 and ASTM A106 have different scopes and are not universally interchangeable.
Higher grade designation does not remove PSL, dimensional, toughness, welding or service qualification requirements.

Seamless or welded line pipe where permitted and fully ordered under API 5L
Decision support
Selection guidance
Choose this grade when
- The pipeline material specification calls for this API 5L grade and an explicit PSL.
- Design, construction, joining, inspection and operating conditions have been defined.
Review another grade when
- A pressure-piping rather than line-pipe product specification governs.
- Sour service, offshore, low-temperature or fracture-control requirements require supplementary engineering controls or substitution review.
