API 5L X70 is a line pipe strength designation under API Specification 5L, not a complete purchasing description or an automatic substitution. A usable order identifies PSL, pipe type, dimensions, delivery condition, service annexes, nondestructive examination, hydrotest, marking and traceability.
This page separates standard-oriented limits from typical reference data. Purchase acceptance comes from the ordered specification and certified material test report.

Reference properties
Confirm PSL, product form, dimensions and certified test results; do not accept using a generic handbook value.
X70 alone does not establish low-temperature or running-fracture performance.
Product testing does not replace pipeline design, installation or system pressure verification.

Corrosion behavior
Carbon line pipe needs a service-specific corrosion-management strategy; X70 provides no inherent corrosion resistance.
Wet H₂S, CO₂, chlorides, soil conditions and deposits require applicable material and integrity controls.
Temperature, concentration, deposits, crevices, stress, surface finish, cleaning, and fabrication quality can change service performance.

Set temperature and toughness requirements from the pipeline design basis and governing code, not the X70 name alone.
Delivery condition
Heat treatment & condition
The ordered delivery condition and manufacturing route control the applicable metallurgical condition.
Do not infer a rolling, quench-and-temper or stress-relief condition from X70 alone.

Fabrication
Mill welding, field welding, bending and coating procedures require qualification for the selected pipe, wall and service.
Control heat input, hydrogen, consumables, fit-up and inspection through the approved pipeline procedure.
Magnetic response: Ferromagnetic carbon-steel line pipe.

Comparisons & substitution
X70 is above X65 in the API 5L series, but is not a drop-in upgrade without design, toughness and weldability review.
X80 and higher-strength pipe can change fabrication, fracture-control and qualification requirements.

Choose this grade when
- The approved pipeline material specification explicitly calls for API 5L X70 and its full qualification envelope is known.
- PSL, pipe construction, dimensions, service environment, testing and documentation can all be specified.
Review another grade when
- Sour service, severe CO₂ corrosion, low-temperature toughness, offshore exposure or fracture arrest governs.
- X70 is proposed as a substitute without reviewing design, welding and code compliance.

State current API 5L edition, X70, PSL, pipe type, delivery condition, OD, wall, length, ends, quantity and coating.
State service basis and applicable supplementary or annex requirements, including sour or CO₂ service where relevant.
Require heat/lot traceability, MTR, qualified NDE route, hydrotest, mechanical results, marking, inspection, packing and destination.
