Tantalum Alloys
Tantalum is selected for exceptional resistance to many chemical media and vacuum high-temperature service, while Ta-W alloys add strength at the cost of forming margin and higher fabrication control.
01
Definition and boundary
Includes pure tantalum and Ta-W mill products; excludes tantalum coatings unless their deposit specification is explicit.
Reference information only: final acceptance is controlled by the ordered product specification, condition, dimensions and certified test results.
02
How the material system works
Stable oxide supports corrosion resistance.
Tungsten solid-solution strengthens tantalum.
Interstitial oxygen/nitrogen embrittle worked products.
03
Representative grades and systems
| Grade or system | Selection focus | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| R05200 unalloyed Ta | Vacuum-melted unalloyed tantalum. | Confirm the governing product specification, delivery condition, section size and acceptance tests before treating designations as interchangeable. |
| R05400 sintered Ta | Powder-route unalloyed tantalum. | Confirm the governing product specification, delivery condition, section size and acceptance tests before treating designations as interchangeable. |
| Ta-2.5W | Strengthened corrosion/high-temperature alloy. | Confirm the governing product specification, delivery condition, section size and acceptance tests before treating designations as interchangeable. |

Applications and selection
Applications and selection
- Acid heat exchangers
- Chemical linings
- Capacitor and furnace parts
Properties and trade-offs
- Verify medium exceptions.
- Choose melt/sinter route deliberately.
- Check cladding bond versus solid product.
07
Fabrication, durability and inspection
Use clean tools and shielding.
Avoid interstitial pickup.
Qualify welds for leak and corrosion duty.
08
Procurement checklist
- State UNS and production route.
- Define interstitial chemistry and annealed condition.
- Specify leak/NDT, surface and corrosion documentation.
