Tantalum Alloys

Tantalum is selected for exceptional resistance to many chemical media and vacuum high-temperature service, while Ta-W alloys add strength at the cost of forming margin and higher fabrication control.

01

Definition and boundary

Includes pure tantalum and Ta-W mill products; excludes tantalum coatings unless their deposit specification is explicit.

Reference information only: final acceptance is controlled by the ordered product specification, condition, dimensions and certified test results.

02

How the material system works

01

Stable oxide supports corrosion resistance.

02

Tungsten solid-solution strengthens tantalum.

03

Interstitial oxygen/nitrogen embrittle worked products.

07

Fabrication, durability and inspection

01

Use clean tools and shielding.

02

Avoid interstitial pickup.

03

Qualify welds for leak and corrosion duty.

08

Procurement checklist

  • State UNS and production route.
  • Define interstitial chemistry and annealed condition.
  • Specify leak/NDT, surface and corrosion documentation.
