Terminology

Define the physical product before comparing offers

A grade names the material; a product specification controls the supplied form, dimensions, condition, tolerances, testing, and acceptance. Similar names do not make sheet and plate, or pipe and tube, interchangeable.

Material scope

Common materials and grades

Carbon and structural steelASTM A36A516 Grade 70A572 Grade 50A588

Commercial definition

Forms and dimensions

01

Hot-rolled plate ordered by thickness, width, and length

02

As-rolled, normalized, normalized-rolled, thermomechanically processed, or quenched-and-tempered conditions where permitted

03

Mill edge, sheared edge, flame-cut edge, or machined edge with agreed tolerance and flatness class

Standards and manufacturing route

Common product standards

  • ASTM A6/A6M general requirements
  • ASTM A36/A36M, A516/A516M, A572/A572M, or A588/A588M

Manufacturing and finishing

  • Slab reheating, controlled rolling, cooling, leveling, and cutting
  • Heat treatment and supplementary testing are specified when the grade or service requires them
  • Shot blasting, shop primer, beveling, drilling, and profiling are separate processing requirements

Acceptance controls

Quality and inspection

01

Review the material test report against the ordered grade and product specification.

02

Confirm dimensions, tolerances, mass, surface condition, and permitted repair.

03

Verify heat or coil traceability, marking, and required inspection records.

04

Agree export packing, preservation, third-party inspection, and document language.

05

Specify impact-test temperature, through-thickness properties, ultrasonic testing, or normalized condition when required.

Use contexts

Common applications

  • Buildings, bridges, and airport structures
  • Pressure vessels and storage equipment
  • Heavy machinery and mining equipment
  • Marine and transport structures
