Overview
ASTM A269/A269M covers seamless and welded stainless tubing for general corrosion-resistant and low- or high-temperature service, whereas ASTM A213/A213M covers seamless ferritic and austenitic alloy-steel boiler, superheater and heat-exchanger tubes. Service wording, manufacturing route and acceptance make them different products.
Designation and acceptance
A269/A269M-25 is a general-service nominal-wall tubing specification that permits seamless and welded routes. A213/A213M-25 is a seamless tube specification for boilers, superheaters and heat exchangers, including ferritic and austenitic alloy families. Both reference A1016/A1016M general tube requirements, but neither may be substituted for the other without verifying product scope, service code, grade, dimensions and testing.
Members and selection
| Designation | Selection context |
|---|---|
| A269 seamless tube | Use for general service when a seamless route is selected and the size, grade, condition and test requirements fit A269. |
| A269 welded tube | Use only where the welded route is permitted and weld quality, examination, surface and downstream service are addressed. |
| A213 austenitic tube | Select seamless austenitic grades for boiler, superheater or heat-exchanger duty with the applicable grade and service controls. |
| A213 ferritic/H-grade tube | Evaluate ferritic and H-grade options through exact temperature, creep, heat-treatment and code requirements rather than name similarity. |
Comparison framework
| Criterion | Decision context |
|---|---|
| Service scope | A269 is general service; A213 is specifically for seamless boiler, superheater and heat-exchanger tubes. |
| Manufacturing route | A269 permits seamless and welded tubing, while A213 is a seamless product specification. |
| Grade architecture | A213 includes ferritic and austenitic alloy grades and H variants; A269 centers on its listed stainless general-service grades. |
| Acceptance route | Testing, sampling and code requirements must be checked against the selected product specification and A1016 general requirements. |
Performance
- Tube-side corrosion depends on grade, heat treatment, weld status, surface condition and process chemistry.
- Heat-transfer and boiler performance depend on OD, wall, straightness, surface, cleanliness and thermal design as well as alloy selection.
- Creep or elevated-temperature performance requires the correct A213 grade variant and construction-code design data, not a generic stainless tube claim.
Orderable product scope
- A269 instrumentation, process and general-service tubing requires OD, nominal wall, length, surface and cleanliness details.
- A213 boiler and superheater tubes require seamless manufacture, grade-specific heat treatment, dimensional control and service inspection.
- Heat-exchanger tube orders require tube-sheet fit, OD/wall tolerances, straightness, surface, testing and packaging against damage.
Processing
- Define annealing and final heat-treatment condition and prevent contamination during straightening, cutting and handling.
- If welded A269 tube is considered, assess weld bead condition, cold work, examination and compatibility with the intended forming or service.
- For A213 equipment, align tube procurement with fabrication expansion, welding, post-fabrication treatment and code inspection plans.
Applications
- A269 for instrumentation lines, general process tubing and fabricated equipment where its scope and service requirements are adequate.
- A213 for boiler and superheater tubes exposed to controlled elevated-temperature service.
- A213 for seamless heat-exchanger tubes when the equipment specification or construction code invokes it.
Selection
- Classify the component by service first: general tubing does not become boiler tubing merely because alloy and dimensions are similar.
- Choose seamless or welded route, grade, OD, wall, condition and test program from the applicable product document.
- Require engineering and code review before accepting an A269-to-A213 or A213-to-A269 substitution proposal.
Procurement
- State ASTM A269/A269M-25 for general service or ASTM A213/A213M-25 for seamless boiler, superheater or heat-exchanger tube.
- State exact grade, seamless or welded route where applicable, OD, nominal wall, length, straightness and quantity.
- Define heat treatment, surface, weld-bead condition where relevant, hydrostatic/NDE and dimensional tests.
- Specify construction code, inspection document, traceability, marking, cleanliness and damage-preventive packaging.
