Overview
ASTM A333/A333M-24 covers nominal-wall seamless and welded carbon and alloy steel pipe for low-temperature service and other applications requiring notch toughness. The order must connect grade, route, heat treatment, size and wall to impact-test temperature, specimen basis, pressure/NDE and the governing piping code.
Designation and acceptance
A333 is a toughness-qualified pipe specification, not a universal synonym for cold-service piping. It includes several ferritic grades and seamless or no-filler-metal welded routes. Grade chemistry, microstructure-control heat treatment, ordered wall, impact-test temperature and specimen availability interact, so design temperature and code exemptions cannot be inferred from grade number alone.

Performance
- Acceptance under ASTM A333 Low-Temperature Pipe depends on the ordered product branch, delivered condition, geometry and specified test basis rather than the standard number alone.
- Thick walls can restrict impact specimen geometry and grade availability, while welding can create additional toughness controls.

- Select the grade, alloy, temper, coating or delivered condition from service, fabrication and the required acceptance evidence; never infer it from a trade name.
- Require a written technical comparison and responsible-engineer approval before substituting another standard, product route or condition.
