Overview

ASTM A53/A53M covers black and hot-dip zinc-coated welded and seamless steel pipe, while ASTM A106/A106M covers seamless carbon-steel pipe for high-temperature service. Similar grade letters or dimensions do not make them equivalent; service, manufacturing route, NPS and schedule, ends, testing and piping-code acceptance must be defined.

Designation and acceptance

ASTM A53/A53M-24 includes welded and seamless pipe types and black or hot-dip zinc-coated supply. ASTM A106/A106M-26 is a seamless high-temperature-service carbon-steel pipe specification. ASTM A530/A530M provides general requirements for specialized pipe. The selected product specification must be coordinated with the applicable piping code, pressure-temperature design, fittings, joining method and inspection plan.

Applications

  • A53 for mechanical, structural or fluid systems only where the project and local code accept its type and finish.
  • A106 for high-temperature process and power piping where the design code invokes seamless carbon steel.
  • Galvanized A53 for approved systems after corrosion, water-quality and fitting compatibility review.

Selection

  • Begin with the piping class, fluid, pressure, temperature, corrosion allowance and code.
  • Select A53 type/grade/finish or A106 grade rather than requesting a vague Grade B pipe.
  • Require engineering approval for A53/A106 substitutions even when NPS and schedule appear identical.

Procurement

  • State ASTM A53/A53M-24 with Type F/E/S, grade and black/galvanized finish, or ASTM A106/A106M-26 with exact grade.
  • State NPS, schedule or nominal wall, OD where required, length, quantity, end preparation and dimensional tolerances.
  • Define hydrostatic or permitted NDE, flattening/bend tests, heat treatment, marking and inspection document.
