Overview
ASTM A653/A653M covers continuously hot-dip zinc-coated and zinc-iron-alloy-coated steel sheet. A correct order separates the base-steel designation from coating designation, sheet dimensions, surface treatment and intended forming. G90 is a coating class—not a substrate grade or a promise of service life—and A924 general requirements also apply.
Designation and acceptance
ASTM A653/A653M-25a combines several base-steel families and two coating families: zinc-coated galvanized sheet and zinc-iron alloy-coated galvannealed sheet. Coating designations such as G60 or G90 belong to the inch-pound system and must be kept with their governing standard and unit system. ASTM A924/A924M-25a provides general requirements for continuously hot-dip metallic-coated sheet.

- Validate bend radius and tooling so the metallic coating is not excessively cracked or powdered.

- Protect dry storage, edges and surface from wet-storage stain, abrasion and incompatible packaging.

- Select the base steel from strength and forming severity before choosing coating class.

- Treat G90, Z275 and JIS coating labels as different systems requiring documented comparison, not automatic equivalence.
Procurement
- State ASTM A653/A653M-25a, the exact base steel designation/type and the A or A/M unit system.
- State zinc or zinc-iron coating designation, minimum ordered thickness basis, width, coil mass/ID or sheet length.
- Define surface quality, spangle/appearance where applicable, chemical treatment, oil, paint compatibility and protective film.
