Overview
ASTM A792/A792M-25a covers steel sheet in coils and cut lengths hot-dip coated with 55% aluminum-zinc alloy for corrosion resistance, heat resistance or both. A complete order separates base-steel designation/grade from coating designation, unit system, dimensions, surface treatment, forming, paintability, testing and storage requirements.
Designation and acceptance
A792 identifies a continuous 55% aluminum-zinc metallic coating system and the available steel-substrate branches; it is not merely a brand name such as Galvalume. Commercial, forming, drawing, high-temperature, structural and HSLA-type purchasing decisions affect properties. The latest A924 general requirements apply unless A792 states otherwise.

- Acceptance under ASTM A792 Aluminum-Zinc Sheet depends on the ordered product branch, delivered condition, geometry and specified test basis rather than the standard number alone.
- Cut edges, severe forming, wet storage, incompatible sealants and mixed-metal contact can shorten service life.
- Service suitability remains an engineering decision: coating designation alone does not define substrate strength, paint system, warranty or suitability for aggressive immersion exposure.
