Zamak Die-Casting Alloys
Zamak alloys are high-purity zinc-aluminum-magnesium(-copper) systems optimized for pressure die casting, with copper level, impurity control, creep and post-cast dimensional aging guiding grade choice.
01
Definition and boundary
Covers Zamak pressure die castings; excludes ZA foundry alloys and zinc-coated steel.
Reference information only: final acceptance is controlled by the ordered product specification, condition, dimensions and certified test results.
02
How the material system works
Aluminum improves strength and castability.
Magnesium controls intergranular behavior.
Copper raises strength but changes aging and creep.
03
Representative grades and systems
| Grade or system | Selection focus | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Zamak 3 | General-purpose dimensional and finishing balance. | Confirm the governing product specification, delivery condition, section size and acceptance tests before treating designations as interchangeable. |
| Zamak 5 | Copper-bearing higher-strength die-casting alloy. | Confirm the governing product specification, delivery condition, section size and acceptance tests before treating designations as interchangeable. |
| Zamak 7 | High-fluidity low-magnesium variant. | Confirm the governing product specification, delivery condition, section size and acceptance tests before treating designations as interchangeable. |

Applications and selection
Applications and selection
- Decorative hardware
- Electrical housings
- Automotive mechanisms
Properties and trade-offs
- Use Zamak 3 for broad balance.
- Add copper only for justified load.
- Validate aging at service temperature.
07
Fabrication, durability and inspection
Control furnace temperature and dross.
Avoid lead/cadmium/tin contamination.
Qualify plating preparation.
08
Procurement checklist
- State ASTM B86 alloy and die-casting route.
- Define aging/dimensional test and load temperature.
- Specify cosmetic finish, porosity and plating adhesion.
09
Standards, sources and review
Standards and designation context
- Applicable ASTM zinc product specification
- Buyer drawing and service requirements
- Agreed inspection and certificate plan
