Steel for Industrial Boilers
Boiler procurement must be driven by the governing construction code, pressure-temperature design, material specification, allowable stress, thickness, welding, heat treatment, examination and certification. A nominal plate grade is not a boiler package.
Answer first
There is no single metal specification for an entire project
Divide the project into systems, document each service environment and governing code, then select compatible materials, product standards, fabrication routes, protection systems and inspection plans.
High-temperature pressure service, water/steam chemistry and thermal cycling
Furnace, combustion, external atmosphere and insulation interfaces
Thick sections, restrained welds, inspection and statutory certification

Project control
Standards, certification and documents
- Applicable boiler code, edition, jurisdiction and certification mark
- Design pressure/temperature, material specification and calculations
- WPS/PQR, NDE, heat-treatment and pressure-test procedures
- Material records, inspection releases and manufacturer data report
Fabrication and logistics
Package interfaces to control
- Fabrication drawings, welding, heat treatment, coating and repair procedures
- Inspection hold points, testing methods, acceptance criteria and document approval
- Identification through cutting and assembly, preservation, packing and consolidated shipping
- Destination rules, site storage, installation interfaces and delivery sequence
Risk register
Common procurement risks
Buying plate before code material and thickness scope are confirmed
Omitting heat treatment, toughness or weld qualification
Using mill certificates as a substitute for fabrication certification
Losing traceability during cutting, forming or repair
